June 12, 2020

On June 8th Governor Northam announced that Northern Virginia would move to Phase 2 beginning Friday June 12. The HRARA Board of Directors has met to begin the process of implementing some of the new components included in Phase 2. Activities such as diving, water exercise classes and swimming instruction are permissible during this phase. You can read the Virginia Forward Phase Two Guidelines, the section directly related to swimming pools is located on pages 23-24.

The board has decided to begin implementation of the following activities:

  • Lap Swimming – Beginning June 13th, lap swimming will be limited to three persons per lane with ten feet of physical distance per swimmer. According to guidance from the State, this applies even for members of the same family. It is accepted that swimmers will pass each other in the water while swimming laps. If a member chooses to share a lane with family on their membership or another member, they may make the reservation in their name on behalf of themselves and up to two additional people. The reservation of that lane will only count as one reservation allocated for that member, not the number who will be using the lane. Members will still be able to reserve a lane for themselves to swim alone (for the time being). Members will not be asked to share a lane with someone else without their consent. The reservation system and session allocation policy will remain the same.
  • Water Aerobics – Beginning June 21st, the water aerobics class will be offered on Sunday mornings (11 – 11:45 AM) and Wednesday evenings (5 – 5:45 PM). The class size must be limited to allow all participants to maintain ten feet of physical distance. Learn more about the program.
  • Diving – Beginning June 24th, the diving boards will be available for use on Wednesday evenings (6 – 8:45 PM). Each diving board will be limited to three persons and ten feet of physical distance per diver must be maintained.

Beginning Monday June 15, all swimming sessions will begin at the top of the hour and last for 45 minutes. Our staff will then conduct the necessary cleaning and sanitation procedures prior to the start of the next session. The on-line reservation system has been updated to reflect this change.

The board will continue to review and discuss other items included in Phase 2 and how they can be implemented at our facility. There is limited guidance and detail that we have been provided with regards to the implementation of these and other requirements. It is our goal to provide as many activities and options as possible while still ensuring a safe environment for our members. The baby pool, lawn, wood decks, playground, grill area and basketball court remain closed. We would like to hear from our membership to help us determine what activities you are most interested in and when they should be scheduled. Please take a moment to complete this survey:

We will continue to communicate with our membership as restrictions are lifted and change over the summer. We thank you all for your patience and understanding during these first few weeks since opening the pool.

June 4, 2020

Welcome to the Holmes Run Acres Hurricanes Electronic Registration platform for our upcoming swim season! 2020 is an unusual year, and we are proud to be one of the few community pools offering any kind of organized summer program for our children. We will strictly follow the state and local government guidelines for health and safety pertaining to the Covid-19 pandemic. During Phase 1 of “reopening”, we will only have one swimmer in each practice lane, yet we want to make practice available to as many qualified swimmers as possible. Here’s the plan:

  • Swimmers must belong to the pool under a Family Membership or a 2-Person Family Membership.
  • All swimmers must be able to swim at least 2 laps of the pool unassisted. Due to distancing requirements, coach will not be able to aid swimmers in the water (except in cases of emergency, of course).
  • This registration portal will only be open until NOON on Saturday, June 6, 2020 – and we will not be able to accept late registrations. We have to have an exact head-count of swimmers in order to organize groups into practice times.
  • Because of our fixed costs, we will not offer multi-swimmer discounts to multiple swimmers from the same family.
  • To reiterate the email from last month, there will be no NVSL-sponsored competition meets, nor will there be any developmental B-meets. No relay carnivals,no IM carnival, no Mini-Meet.
  • Due to the small group structure, coach will be able to offer more individual instruction to each swimmer – a great value for the registration price!
  • Once we have a final roster of swimmers, we will organize swimmers into groups of 6 (using the Lower Pool with one coach) or 10 (using the Upper and Lower Pool with two coaches). The priority is to arrange swimmers by age and ability, and to place siblings in different age groups to practice on the same days.
  • Practices for each swimmer will either be Monday/Wednesday/Fridays or Tuesday/Thursday/Saturdays. Our two practice sessions will meet from 9:30am – 10:30am and 10:45am – 11:45am and will have time built-in for needed cleaning between sessions.
  • Team Reps will send practice session assignments to each swim family no later than Sunday, June 7th.
  • Practices begin Monday, June 8th and continue through Saturday, August 1st. There will be no practice on Saturday, July 4th.

When we receive guidance about Phase 2 reopening, we may increase the number of swimmers in each lane, add social activities and other enhancements. We may also be able to open swimming opportunities to our youngest Tropical Storm swimmers who need assistance in the water. (stay tuned!)

We are thrilled to welcome back Coach Eric Ross! We may also see Coach Brett Davey and Coach Casey Tripp on deck, so our swimmers are in capable – and ENTHUSIASTIC – hands!

Be safe out there,

Emily and Heidi

HRARA Shareholder Pandemic Assistance Fund

This fund was established to support those members of our pool community who may be facing financial distress due to the consequences of Covid-19.

5/28/2020 On May 27th the HRARA Board of Directors met online to determine the specific procedures for opening this season and allowing members to reserve lanes for lap swimming. After much consideration we have decided to delay the opening of the pool until Saturday May 30. This will allow us the time necessary to develop the lane reservation system, communicate specific rules and policies to the membership and ensure that the management staff is prepared to operate the safest environment possible for all of us. The “Early -Bird” discount has been extended through May 29, 2020. As you are all aware, we must begin the season under specific guidelines issued by the Governor. This is unfamiliar territory for all of us, and the board is committed to doing everything possible to make this season enjoyable for all our members. The information outlined below is our starting point for the season. We expect that policies and procedures will evolve based upon your feedback and changes in the restrictions we must operate under.

Reserving Swim Sessions

To begin the season, lanes for lap swimming may be reserved for a period of 45 minutes. After each session, the facility will be closed for 30 minutes so that staff can clean the facility prior to the start of the next session. We have reduced the time to swim from one hour to 45 minutes to try and accommodate as many members as possible. We will monitor the usage during the first week to determine if this is working and make adjustments based upon feedback and analysis. A scheduling system is being developed. We will send out an announcement as soon as it is available. You will need your eSoft Planner login to make reservations, which is the same system used to pay for memberships online.

To begin the season, members will be able to reserve up to two swim sessions per week, per member in the household. (i.e. A family membership of 4 individuals can reserve up to 8 sessions in a one-week period.) We will not be able to guarantee members a minimum number of sessions per week. You may call the front desk for same day reservations if any are available and it will not count against your weekly allocation. Physical “walk-ins” without a reservation will not be available.

Detailed information on reserving swim sessions will posted on the website.

Safety Measures

Several safety protocols are being implemented to make visits to the pool as safe as possible. We ask that if any members do not feel well that they refrain from coming to the facility to swim. All members are encouraged to wear a mask or face covering at all times except when swimming. Social distancing will be required while entering and exiting the facility as well. Only the bathrooms in the upper bath house will be available, the lower bath house will be closed. We ask that all members use the restroom and shower prior to coming to the pool to swim. Bathrooms in the upper bath house may be used if necessary. There will be no vending machines offered and the water fountain will be out of service. Members may bring a personal water bottle with them to the pool if desired. Additionally, staff will not be issuing kickboards or any flotation devices for lap swimming. Members must bring their own equipment to use during lap swimming. Your cooperation with these protocols is important so that we can help ensure the safety and well-being of all our members and staff.

The 2020 season is finally here. While we do not know what the future will bring, we are all hoping that you will join us this summer. We will continue to communicate changes as we progress through the season and hope to hear from all of you. Please contact us with any questions or suggestions.
